My family of five is planning a trip to Coyhaique from late November until the first of January. We will have about six weeks in Chile , ideally. We are looking into renting a car and driving the Carretera Austral, taking a bus along the route, driving or busing from Santiago to Puerto Montt and then flying from there. I have also considered the ferry from Puerto Montt to Cabachuco. What do people recommend in terms of transportation for a family with kids ages 6, 12, and 14?
How long would the drive realistically take us if we chose that option? I would say the more economical way to get from Santiago to Coyhaique. Interurban bus from Santiago to Puerto Montt. Puerto Chacabuco is one hour away from Coyhaique , the region's capital, and it is also the start point for the touristic excursions towards the Laguna San Rafael, which is only a few hours of navigation.
With good visibility it is possible to see a chain of high summits and volcanoes in the continent. In the second half of the journey, the boat sails through fjords and islands of incomparable beauty, until arriving to Puerto Chacabuco after a hour-journey. You could take the ferry. Tickets are arouns CLP per adult. If you look at Sky Airline , since you could book well in advance, you could get tickets from around CLP Keep in mind that the air ticket is a return ticket, the ferry in not.
This makes the airline cheaper than the ferry. The ferry should be far more spectacualr, though. Aother option is to rent a car and drive to Hornopiren and catch a ferry there to Caleta Gonzalo.
This is quite a bit cheaper than the Puerto Montt ferry but does not run every day. This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity.
